Sophia Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz was born in Germany in 1744. She became Queen Charlotte of Great Britain when she married King George III in 1761, and this mezzo-tint was printed in 1762 shortly after the Royal marriage. Charlotte reigned as Queen for 57 years covering the American Revolution, the French Revolution, and the Napoleonic Wars. During that time she and George had 15 children, including two future Kings. She was known as a passionate supporter and patron of music, botany, and the arts.
